The data from all data bearing media entering Sims Recycling Solutions facilities is sanitized or wiped if the product (computer, laptop, printer, hard drive, cell phone etc) is to be remarketed. All media sanitization is performed using NIST SP 800-88, Guidelines for Media Sanitization. Sims Recycling Solutions sanitizes thousands of data bearing media devices each month and is proud that there has never been a “data incident” from any Sims Recycling Solutions location.

Any data bearing media which (1) our customers desire not to be remarketed or (2) cannot be properly sanitized, is physically destroyed. Sims Recycling Solutions performs the physical destruction through very sophisticated, in-plant shredder systems. As part of the shredding process, the different metals and metal bearing components are separated making it impossible to reconstruct the media or data. Our guarded facilities are access controlled using proximity cards, photo ID badges, metal detectors, CCTV, and manned guard posts. Sims Recycling Solutions can arrange for single use conveyance under security seal or provide lockable chests to assure there is no breach of security during the transport of media-containing devices. Transport is via our own trucks with fully-checked staff, or via qualified third parties.

Some situations require that customers physically witness the destruction of the electronic media, Sims Recycling Solutions can accommodate this witnessed destruction by hosting the customer at the location providing the physical destruction or by providing a webcam link to witness the destruction over the internet. Significant additional charges will apply as this causes production disturbance and takes staff time.

Any company can provide a certification that material has been properly destroyed or recycled, but none has the ability to stand behind and assure this certification like Sims Recycling Solutions. We can provide the certificates by the job and related weight or by individual serial number. Customers often use the certificates by serial number to assure these assets have been removed from financial, maintenance and insurance records.
